Day 6 -- to Auburn, ME

A sparkling morning in Vermont! We packed up our gear and headed out to breakfast: pancakes and french toast with Vermont maple syrup all around. What a great start to the day.

From Waterbury, we drove north about 15 miles to Stowe, where we hitched a ride up the mountain on a chair lift and rode back down on the alpine slide. The town of Stowe as well as the ski resort are very charming and pretty -- full of cozy-looking inns with window boxes overflowing with flowers and interesting cafes and restaurants.

Until we saw signs, I did not realize that the Von Trapp family home is in Stowe. Too bad we didn't have time to swing by. The kids love "The Sound of Music."

Onward to Auburn, ME, via Highway 2, which cuts across northern New Hampshire and, according to a camper we met this morning, is called "Moose Alley." Unfortunately, no moose sightings today.

As we got into Maine, the skies got darker and then opened up. It was raining as we pulled into Auburn, and it poured the rest of the evening.

Good thing we're not camping tonight! We're staying at the home of Steve and Amy L., good friends of ours from Lafayette -- they both were in the band with Keith -- who moved away about 4 years ago. We enjoyed a delicious lobster dinner on the porch and spent the evening chatting and catching up while the kids, with Steve and Amy's son Matthew, who's a month older than Clare, mastered Star Wars on the Playstation.

Tonight, as it pours outside, we are counting our blessings: for dry beds and dry clothes. And especially for good friends, near and far.
