Another gorgeous morning.

We spent the day in the car, careening through the Upper Peninsula and skipping across northern Wisconsin. Then we turned right and headed up the north shore of Lake Superior.

Our destination tonight was Gooseberry Falls, State Park about 40 miles north of Duluth, along the shore of Lake Superior. About 10 miles shy of our campground, we stopped for dinner at Betty’s Pies, a landmark eatery outside of Two Harbors.

The busy restaurant has set up a makeshift take-out window where we placed our order, and while we waited for the food, Keith and I checked the weather forecast: Storms are expected after 10 p.m., and it’s supposed to rain through the morning.
We recognize that the forecast is in constant flux and that we should read it as someone’s best guess rather than as established fact … but three days ago we packed up a campsite in the pouring rain, and it was not fun. We don’t want to do it again tomorrow, when we’re supposed to drive on toward Grand Marais.
So, we called around and found a vacancy at the Comfort Inn in Two Harbors. Natalie was relieved, and Charlie was happy if everyone else was happy; but Clare initially resisted the change … until she remembered that we had passed the Comfort Inn on our way to Betty’s Pies – and she had noticed a mini-golf course laid out next to the parking lot. So, she was on board, too.
We spent the rest of the evening in a battle for the title Mini-Golf Champion of the Minnesota North.
All hail Clare Long, Wielder of the Magic Putter, Ruler of the Mini-Greens, Eagle-Tamer, Ace-Shooter. She edged Keith out by one stroke.
Side note: I just realized this is my 200th post?!?!?
