I woke up this morning after a surprisingly great night of sleep. The campground was quiet, and the Teardrop was cool and comfortable.
Dad and I got up at 6 this morning and wordlessly – so as not to provoke the creepy guy next door – packed everything up, ate breakfast and hit the road by 7:15. We made our way into the national park, easily found a parking spot and embarked on a hike down into the canyon, through a wonderland of sculpted stone pillars and spires called hoodoos – formed (say it with me!) over millions of years of deposition and lithification and erosion.
We then drove the main road through the park – stopping at pullouts for scenic views and enjoying a picnic lunch at the far end.
Then we got set up in our new campsite in Bryce Canyon National Park’s North Campground. We have our own campsite! – heaped with pinecones from the stately lodgepole pines that tower above us. We have our own space! And a fire ring!

There is a retaining wall, and steps that lead up to our campsite! It’s so neat and civilized!
Earlier today Dad spotted a fully electric Rivian SUV, and we chatted a bit with the family who drove it all the way from Illinois. He was inspired to find out that they have not spent a ton of travel time charging it enroute. So he’s spending the afternoon thinking more about electric cars.
Besides thinking about electric cars, we spent the afternoon lounging around our beautiful, bucolic campsite. It’s been a pleasantly not-hot day -- it is simply gorgeous here. We made a campfire – our first on this trip – and cooked dinner over the grate, opened a bottle of wine, played cribbage and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We are headed for Las Vegas tomorrow, and will stay in a hotel, but we’re not even that excited about the prospect. We have really enjoyed camping this week, and are pretty sad to wrap it up. At least we have a couple more nights of camping to look forward to before the trip wraps up; after a few days in San Diego, we’ll be back on the road.
