Day One

Day 1 -- Lafayette, IN, to Shoreview, MN

We had planned to be on the road yesterday, but found that we really needed the extra day to finish packing. So after a good night's sleep, we loaded up the car, attached the trailer and were ready to hit the road. Only after we started the car and shifted into drive did we realize that we almost forgot Ruby in the back yard. Whoops. Close call. We-reparked the car, fetched the dog from the yard and she happily spend the next 10 hours shedding her entire coat all over our automobile interior.
We got through Chicago with very little delay, and stopped at a rest area just past the Illinois-Wisconsin border. Keith took the kids inside to potty while I took Ruby to the overgrown pet area on the far end of the truck lot. As I watched, a beat-up white van pulled up and parked bumper-to-bumper behind our trailer. Inside were a couple of federal marshals with six or eight fully shackled prisoners, who all got out for a pee-break. I made sure Keith kept the kids away from the building entrance, lest we inadvertantly stumble into a scene from "Con Air." You know -- Steve Buscemi -- yikes. Aside from becoming the Alphabet Game champion of central Wisconsin, that may be the most exciting thing that happened all day.
We also stopped in Necedah, Wisc., birthplace of our trusty Teardrop trailer, and the kids and I got to sign the wall next to the autographs of all the other new Teardrop owners.
We're in Shoreview for the night. Total miles today: 520. That should be the longest drive for a while! Up to Lake Vermilion tomorrow.
