Day Twenty-nine -- to Grand Island, NE

Day 29 – Frisco, CO, to Grand Island, NE

We reluctantly said good-bye to Geoff, Kim and the girls this morning. We had a great time with them and are so grateful they could get away for a couple of days to meet us in the mountains. Thanks, guys! Let’s do that again, soon!
We weren’t on the road until about noon, but it was easy-going through Denver. In fact, Keith didn’t even notice that we were through the city and on I-76 headed for Nebraska until I pointed it out to him. By then, we had left the mountains behind and were back in a more flat, familiar Midwestern landscape.
When we met up with Mark D. in San Francisco, he suggested that we stay with his parents in Omaha on the way home. He even printed out Mapquest directions for us. And Bob and Elaine e-mailed Keith’s Blackberry themselves to personally invite us to their home. It was an especially generous and very tempting offer. But when we looked at our map and figured that it’s more than 600 miles between Frisco and Omaha, we realized that it would be out of our range. We’ll have to take them up on the offer another time.
We tried to stop in Kearny, NE, but ran head-on into an EMT convention and couldn’t find a vacancy. So we had to drive 50 more miles, and here we are at a Holiday Inn in Grand Island. We got out of the van and were immediately engulfed in heavy. moist air. Ah, yes: humidity. I didn’t miss you while we were away.
Bathes are definitely on order for the morning. Our children are filthy. I’m glad we have a chance to get cleaned up before we arrive in Iowa City. We showed up at Steve’s doorstep in Berkeley looking like we just stepped out of a “Grizzly Adams” episode: faces smudged with soot and two weeks of dirt under our fingernails. I’m sure we made a great impression.
