Days Twenty-two and Twenty-three

Days 22 and 23
With a rehearsal dinner to attend in Olema, CA, Friday afternoon, the five of us plus Steve all headed out in late morning to explore the nearby Point Reyes National Seashore. By the time we got there, we only had a couple of hours to spend, so we had a picnic lunch at an oyster farm, where the oysters are pulled right out of the bay and then served up fresh right there, and then took a little walk on a path that traverses the San Andreas Fault.
We changed clothes in the visitors center and then drove into Olema for the dinner. As we pulled into town, we heard a woman’s terrible screams coming from a nearby parking lot and looked to see frantic people crowded around an SUV and a woman on the ground. We found out later that the SUV had pulled too far into a parking space and pinned this woman against the building, breaking her leg. How awful!
Steve passed the time on his own in nearby Point Reyes Station while the rest of us attended the lovely rehearsal dinner at the Olema Inn. Tom, Keith’s brother, and Jill and the kids had just flown in the day before, and it was great to see them, along with Keith’s mom, Susan, and her husband Tom, and his sons, Mike (the groom) and TR, and TR’s wife, Shawna, and Lauren (the bride). Our kids were overjoyed to see their cousins and their Grandma and Papa, and spent most of the event running around in the little yard behind the inn.
The wedding the next day – at an estate formerly owned by Jerry Garcia near Nicasio, CA – was simply beautiful. The grounds were stunning, the sky was sapphire blue, the bride was breathtaking, the ceremony was sweet and simple and the reception was thoughtful and elegant. I loved the little details, like the parasols available to shade guests from the sun, the paper fans handed out before the ceremony, the lemon tarts and iced coffee for dessert, and the four-piece country-swing band with upright bass, acoustic guitars and accordion. Well done, Lauren and Mike! We wish you all the best.
We were back at Steve and Hélène’s by 8 or so, and then tried unsuccessfully to put our wound-up kids to bed. The older two were still awake at 9:30, so we perched them at Steve and Hélène’s bedroom window to watch the Fourth of July fireworks over the bay. Keith and I spent the rest of the evening packing up all our stuff. We’re back on the road tomorrow! Many thanks to Steve and Hélène for your wonderful hospitality. We appreciate the use of your washing machine and your shower and the chance to sleep in soft beds. Most of all, we are grateful for the chance to spend time with you. Thanks for everything! We had a great time.
